Our budget means that we now where all of our money is going to go each and every month. It is easy to stick to it because we are in charge of our money now, not the other way around. That's one reason I love our budget. The other item from above, fear of not having fun on a budget, is just not true. When we want to do something fun, we plan it into our budget and then we have fun. We don't worry about it after the fact. There is no bill that follows us home. It makes the fun even more fun. That's the other reason I love our budget. I encourage everyone to try a budget. Give it three months before you give up on it. I think you will learn to love your budget, too.
I really do love out budget. I know that budget is a dirty word in a lot of households, but it is a wonderful thing to be on a budget from month to month. I know the fear for a lot of people is that they won't be able to stick with it. Another fear is that there will not be any more fun. I can say that both of those valid fears are not true. We have been doing a budget for over three years now, and there is nothing bad about it. We had concerns when we started, but we decided that what we had been doing wasn't working. What we used to do is just wing it and hope we can pay the minimums on all of our debts each month. We don't have any debts now, or credit cards, but we do have a budget that ensures we not only pay our bills every month, but we have money left over to put back for future plans and retirement.

I've blogged about cash before, but given some of the recent news items I've seen, I thought it was time for another reminder. Cash is the way to go. I've seen stories about credit card skimmers at gas stations, a personal concern of mine, and then a recent story about a lady who had her card info stolen at a major coffee chain. If she had been using cash, then there would not have been any trouble for the lady. The same goes for skimmers at the gas pump. If people use cash, then there is not an issue. Some might say, "But I get the rewards for my credit card!" Been there, done that. We had an airline miles card that we thought would mean free airfare to exotic locales. We would have had to spend something ridiculous, tens of thousands of dollars, to get enough miles for even a small trip. Do the easy math and it's much easier to simply buy a ticket outright. That same goes for ALL of the rewards cards. They are all a ripoff. As I said, been there, done that. We are a strictly cash household. We pay for groceries, fuel, fun, anything and everything that we can is paid for in cash. We've never had our cash hacked, skimmed, or defrauded. We spend less because we use cash. There is not really a downside. And for those who think, "If I have cash, I might get robbed!" I used to have that thought, too. Guess what? The bad people out there don't have x-ray vision. They don't know if you have cash or not. And the credit card companies definitely rip people off all the time. We're not alone in being an all-cash household, but there aren't enough of us out there yet. So use the new year to make a new start and go to all cash. You'll be glad you did. |
