I have friends and colleagues who are members of the LGBTQ community. While I know that they are part of the community and I am not, it has never even been a topic of conversation. We all just accept one another as we are. Why that is so hard for some people is beyond me. It is not up to me to tell anyone else who they can or should be with. It is also not up to me to tell anyone what to do with their own body. It is up to me to accept those decisions and embrace the other person (metaphorically, unless they are huggers).
I am about as normative as it gets: I am white, male, cis gender, hetero-normative. I fail to see how those qualities hurt anyone. At the same time, I fail to see how others who have varied, wonderful qualities hurts me in any way. For those who want to take a religious stance on this whole issue, just remember the passage from Corinthians 13:13: And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love (NIV). I don't see hate, bigotry, prejudice, or judgment in there anywhere.
Tolerance might be a starting point, but it isn't enough. Acceptance is what we need. I take it for granted that I will be accepted with all of the qualities I listed above. Why shouldn't I accept others for whatever qualities they have? I do accept others, and I appreciate the value and richness they add to my life. I hope that more people can get on board with that idea.
