Perhaps it is the greatest curse of our lives that we have choice. We can choose from many things and choose to do many things. Most of us have the freedom to make an almost unimaginable number of choices each and every day. But that doesn't mean that we can have it all. In fact, it means just the opposite. Every time we make a choice, we have to choose to give something up to get the other thing we want. If I want my cake, then I can't eat it. If I eat my cake, then I don't have it anymore. I made a choice, and that choice negates me having it "all".
Now, I am a very spiritual person. I consider myself a man of faith. Some might contend that when we die and go to heaven, if you believe in that, then we will have it all. But when we are in heaven, we don't have our time on earth anymore. We gave up one thing for the other. We can't have it all. I mentioned that just a few lines back. But it's true. The very nature of things means that we always have to make a choice and hope that it is the best choice we can make. We make the choice knowing full well that we can't have it all. But we should also make the choice knowing that we are always free to make another choice if we don't like the way things have worked out.
Some may call that a version of having it all. I prefer to think of it as having changed my mind and wanting something different now. But if I make a different choice, I still have to leave something behind. But that's okay. I don't want it all. Not really. I just want enough, and I want to be able to share what I have with others. Maybe that is how we can "have it all".
