So I grabbed out envelopes and went out to shop. I have to say that it was a great way to get out of the house and lift my spirits a little. The thing is, I figured out how to really do retail therapy. I bought food for our local food bank. I got to spend money and help other people at the same time. I didn’t buy a bunch of useless, random junk that would sit around our house. I bought a number of different food items and took them to one of the donation spots around town. And I have to say, I felt great spending that money.
So the next time you feel the need for some retail therapy, think about two things before you go out and shop. The first thing to think about is do you have the money? Credit cards are evil and only cause problems down the road. We use envelopes and have one dedicated to giving, so for me it was a no-brainer. Second, think about what you are spending the money on. Do you personally have the basics covered? Chances are, someone else in your area does not. Find your local food pantry or shelter and help them out with a donation. You get to spend and help someone else. It’s a great way to be selfish and selfless at the same time.
