I can't say it strongly enough that we ALL need to move to a cash system. We personally don't own a credit card. We have a debit card that we use for fuel purchases, but everything else is done in cash. I don't go to the store without the amount of money in hand that I am willing to spend. When I pay with cash, I have zero worries that someone is going to hack into the store and steal my info because the info simply isn't there to steal.
I know some folks say that cash is dangerous because someone might rob you. Well, when I used to use credit cards, I never paid them off at the end of the month. I ended up paying interest on groceries. Sound familiar? I was getting robbed every month! The dumb part? I was doing it to myself. There are many stats out there that show that folks who pay with credit spend MORE on just about everything. I was certainly not the exception. Since we moved to cash only, I find that we spend about 50-60% less money each month. I am not exaggerating the percentage for effect. We are now in control of our money instead of some bank that owns the credit card we used.
We get our cash at the beginning of the month and fill our envelopes. When the cash is gone, there is no more coming that month. There has been more than one month that we end up scrounging in the freezer for dinner the last couple of nights of the month. But you know what? It hasn't hurt us to work through the stockpile of food we seem to always have. In fact, using cash has made us more aware of what we do have and that we shouldn't be wasteful with what we have.
So let's all do it. Go to a cash system and dump the credit. Your bank account will be happy you did it. You will gain some peace of mind from it. In fact, the only folks that won't be happy are the ones peddling credit cards, and I don't have much sympathy for them.
