Now, I do not have a problem with the rights that people have. We do all have (or should in some parts of the world) certain basic rights as human beings. Certainly here in the USA we have a number of rights listed in the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. What people seem to overlook a vast majority of the time is that we also have responsibilities to uphold. Some people whine about this right or that right, but they don't give a rat's a** about what they should be doing as part of their responsibilities.
To me, only concerning ourselves with what we can do is childish and not very helpful. All too often the talk is, "Well, I have a right to do this or that thing, so quit stepping on my rights." I think the much more helpful stance for people to start with is, "What are my responsibilities in this or that situation? What part should I be playing to help myself and others?"
So the next time that you want to flex your muscles and assert this right or that right, stop and ask yourself what your responsibility is when it comes to exercising that right. Ask what should you do, not just what can you do.
