Penguins breed in a very harsh climate. The winds that blow across the southern regions where the penguins live are brutal. To combat that killing wind, the penguins take turns facing the wind. The colony works together and forms a giant huddle. The penguins on the outside of the huddle form a windbreak for the rest. Every so often, the penguins that are warmer from being inside the huddle shift to the outside and let the wind-blown penguins warm up. What if people did that? I don't mean that we should stand against the wind for others, but what if we took turns taking care of the group? And then, when our energy is flagging, someone else can take over the harshest duty for a time. Shared responsibility is not something that most people do well. What if we did share responsibility? Wouldn't everyone benefit?
Then there is the actual breeding. When the mother penguin lays the egg, the dad takes over care. The mother moves to the ocean to replenish her energy that she used to create the shell for the egg. While she is away, the father has to take care of the egg until it hatches. Upon hatching, the father penguin gives the baby chick its first meal. The food is some that the father penguin stores up until the chick needs it. He holds that food even at his own peril. So what if fathers actually helped take care of the young? I know that many do, but many are absentee at best. Fathers need to learn that their offspring are worth sacrificing for. There is more to being a father than just donating.
