One person that tried to get money lives in Oslo, Norway. How did an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico affect that person exactly? There were several other examples of people that really had no business trying to get money from the settlement but were trying to anyway. I have to say that the behavior disgusts me. I am not employed by anyone connected with the company that is paying folks. But when I hear about anyone trying to cash in on something that has nothing to do with them, I have a problem with that.
So as far as I'm concerned, folks trying to gain from a disaster that had nothing to do with them is fraud. It shows an alarming lack of integrity. I talked about integrity in business in a recent post. This story shows a lack of that with individuals and the attorneys trying to help those folks out. If you feel you deserve something for nothing, then that is a problem. When people try to get that something under false pretenses, that seems to be fraud at its most basic level.
I think what upsets me the most is the idea that some people feel entitled to get something for nothing. If you want money, work for it. Don't defraud other people because you think they have it coming, or you hit a rough patch, or things just didn't go your way. Have some integrity.
