I have seen a lot of people, and I do mean a lot of people, rush to get through an open door before it closes on them. I have seen people rush through the left door, knocking into people, butting in front of people, or nearly causing others to trip and fall, all in the name of getting through an open door. How hard is it, I always wonder, to push open a door or push a button on a wall? Is it really worth plowing through other people to make it through an open door, on the wrong side no less? I have seen people walk sedately until they get to the open door, and then they dart through so they don't have to touch the other door. How crazy is that?
When I see these people, I can't help but wonder why it is so important to them to get through the open door. I see it as folks trying so hard to find what they perceive to be a shortcut, or a way to exert less energy, that they are willing to inconvenience others. That always makes me curious as to what else these folks are willing to take shortcuts on. If something as simple as opening a door is too much, then what real, major league issues do these folks dodge or skimp on?
So instead of rushing to get through the open door, take the extra moment, or the extra effort, or the long cut, and open the door for yourself. Maybe even spare a moment and hold the door for the next person. But please, I beg of you, quit running for the open door/shortcut in life. The shortcuts never lead to anything worthwhile.
