How many people have something right in front of them, but then see something else that they think is going to be better? Whether it's a new house, new car, new partner, or a new job, so many times folks think that what is right in front of them is somehow less than the "new thing" that just appeared. I would bet that we all know someone that fits that bill. Maybe we all do at some point. I can think of times that I thought "something better" was coming my way because I wasn't satisfied with what was right in front of me. If I really thought about it, I would guess that the thing right in front of me was at least equal, or maybe better (or better for me) than the "new" thing that I thought would be better.
I'm not suggesting that things can't or don't get better when we reach for new things. I think the danger comes in thinking that "something better" is always just around the bend. Sometimes the best thing for us is what is right in front of us and we need to be content with that. If we are always waiting for something better, sometimes we can miss out on what we need and have right there at hand (or mouth, for our cats).
